Contact and Contactless Interface Testing

Contact Interface

EMV Contact Level 1 ensures a level of interoperability for cards and acceptance devices. The electrical characteristics and transmission protocols are tested.

Visa recognizes EMVCo’s terminal approval process for contact interface testing for devices.

Contactless Interface

EMV Contactless Level 1 ensures a level of interoperability for contactless products and acceptance devices. Testing is comprised of magnetic field characteristics and digital testing to ensure the timing, anti-collision, and protocol characteristics are able to carry the communication.

Visa recognizes EMVCo’s terminal approval process for contactless level 1 for terminals, and EMVCo’s NFC consumer device process for mobile products.

Interoperability

Visa requires interoperability testing to ensure that contactless products and terminals are interoperable with each other. Interoperability testing is a part of the official testing process, and the performance during this testing will be part of final approval consideration. Products that fail to communicate with multiple products, or whose performance is too slow, may not be eligible for Visa approval.

Terminals are tested at Visa accredited test laboratories.

Contactless and dual interface cards, and static chip wearables, are tested by Approval Services at their Singapore lab.

Effective September 1 2016, contactless and dual interface chip cards are required to support a minimum ICC key size of 1152 bits and still meet the contactless performance requirement of ≤ 400 milliseconds. Please refer to Approval Services Announcement ASA20150801 for details.

Mobile and NFC-based wearables are tested by Approval Services at their Foster City lab, however, Visa supports and leverages EMVCo’s mobile product level 1 testing and approval process, which includes interoperability testing, in which case a vendor does not need to repeat this testing with Visa. Vendors will need to license and obtain the Visa applets used for EMVCo testing prior to submitting their products to EMVCo.

Test Plans and Test Tools

Test plans and commercial test tools with associated test scripts are available to assist vendors in conducting quality assurance (QA) testing prior to submitting the product for official testing.

Commercial test tools and test scripts are available from Test Tool Vendors shown below. Vendors should contact their tool supplier to obtain any test script updates.
